• the Physical Restraints Belts

The use of physical restraints is widespread, but much information is lacking, and above all, it's imperative a lot of training for the Caregivers who apply them.

The lack of training is one of the reasons that physical restraints are the source of serious accidents and deaths caused by misuse and ignorance of the risks that misuse can cause.

The photo shows a Hospital bed where the absolute bad application of a restraint Abdominal Belt can be seen.

In the news you can read:
Six months locked up and unable to see even the sunlight. Sometimes they get distracted and lose their sense of location, become disoriented and lose track of whether it is night or day. The situation sometimes reaches such an extreme that, due to their state of anxiety and agitation, and in spite of us, they must be restrained for their safety. The workers of the Emergency Service the Hospital  describe the day to day ........

In this case, security is NOT guaranteed, and it is very unfortunate that ignorance of the use and how to correctly apply physical restraint abdominal belts reaches these extremes.

  • Ineffective and dangerous restraint belts

In this photo you can see how the Patient has been able to slip away from the Belt, but he has also been stuck in it.
The physical restraint belts have always been used as a supposed safety element for the benefit of the patient.

But these belts have already shown in countless times that they do not provide safety and are also dangerous for the demented Patient.

Why are they ineffective and dangerous ?
it is easy for the confused and disoriented Patient to escape from the belt towards the head of the bed, since these devices do not prevent it, as they do not have any element that stops the Patient's exit up the belt.
in case the belt is added with a shoulder or thoracic harness to prevent the Patient from escaping upwards, that combination is very expensive, cumbersome to place the Patient, and very uncomfortable and very restrictive for the patient.
With the Belt and the Harnes applied, the Patient can not move freely in the bed, nor turn in it, nor be placed in a comfortable position to sleep and rest.

The alternatives to the use of dangerous restraint belts are the innovative "Safety Technical Clothing for use at Bed" that guarantees the Patient:
    • Safety in bed
    • Freedom of movement in bed
    • Comfort

Deaths caused by restraint belts in elderly bedridden:

    Source:

The physical restraint belts misapplied by Caregivers who have not been properly trained in their use cause deaths. In this document you can see the results.

Not only the ignorance of the correct use causes accidents, but also that the type of Patient to whom the physical restraint has to be applied also conditions its use.

It is more than proven that the containment belts are not a good solution to ensure the safety of the patient.

  • Limit Physical Restraint Risks

In this document you can see on pages 6 to 8 information regarding deaths caused by the use of physical restraints in elderly patients.

It is more than demonstrated by all the information that can be collected on the internet that the Physical Restraint Belts are dangerous and causes unnecessary deaths.

However, Physical Restraint continues to be used, in a very irresponsible way, in Institutions of all kinds, by Caregivers who have not been properly trained in its use.

Not seeking a solution to this problem means that unnecessary deaths and serious accidents will continue to occur in Health Institutions, Home Care, and in all countries.
  • Deaths by Physical Restraint Belts

    Background:
Physical restraint is used primarily for Patients at risk of falls, those with motor distress and agitated behavior, and those who manifest intent to harm themselves or are at risk of suicide. The use of Freedom Restraint Measures (FRM) and, in particular, the use of physical restraints against the will of the Patient, can be a serious intrusion of basic human rights and, as such, an act of violence against the Patient. The improper use of physical restraints can cause injuries of varying severity, which can sometimes be fatal.
